In the small town of Hillsboro, California, a young boy named Elliott lives with his single mother, Mary. One night, while exploring the woods near his home, Elliott encounters an alien who has been left behind by its spaceship. The alien, who Elliott names E.T., is injured and dying from exposure to Earth's atmosphere. Elliott takes E.T. back to his home and hides him in his bedroom closet. As the days pass, Elliott and E.T. form a strong bond, with Elliott learning about E.T.'s ability to communicate telepathically and heal through physical contact. However, their friendship is put to the test when government scientists and authorities become aware of E.T.'s presence on Earth. A team led by Keys, a determined and ruthless agent, is tasked with capturing E.T. and returning him to his own planet. Meanwhile, Elliott's older brother Michael and their friend Steve are skeptical of Elliott's claims about the alien's existence, leading to friction within the family. As the government agents close in on E.T.'s hiding place, Elliott and his friends must come together to help the alien return home. Along the way, they face numerous challenges, including a dramatic showdown with Keys and his team at the iconic Reese's Pieces factory. Despite the odds against them, Elliott and his friends manage to outsmart their pursuers and get E.T. back on his spaceship just in time for it to take off. The film concludes with Elliott waving goodbye to E.T. as he disappears into the sky, leaving behind a changed young boy who has learned valuable lessons about friendship, empathy, and the importance of believing in oneself.
