In "Dark Habits," Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia weaves a darkly comedic and visually striking tale of redemption and transformation. After the tragic death of her drug-dealing boyfriend, Lola (Nerea Barros), a cabaret singer struggling with addiction, finds herself on the run from the authorities. Desperate for a place to hide and detoxify, she seeks refuge in an unconventional sanctuary - a convent for fallen women, known as "Las Hermanas de la Caridad" or The Sisters of Charity. Upon arrival, Lola is met with a mixture of suspicion and compassion by Sister Eulalia (Carmen Morales), the no-nonsense but caring superior. As she navigates this unfamiliar world, Lola is forced to confront her past and the demons that have driven her to self-destruction. Meanwhile, the convent's inhabitants, a motley crew of women from various walks of life, each with their own secrets and struggles, welcome Lola into their fold. There's Sister Michaela (Lola Dueñas), a sweet but awkward novice; Maria (Pep Munné), a former prostitute seeking redemption; and Elena (Luisa Marqués), a reformed junkie trying to rebuild her life. As the days pass, Lola becomes embroiled in the convent's eccentricities and traditions. She befriends Sister Walburga (Rosario Pardo), a quirky and charismatic nun with a penchant for rock music; and helps Maria prepare for her first communion. Through these experiences, Lola begins to shed her tough exterior and confront the emotional scars that have haunted her since childhood. As the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur, "Dark Habits" takes on a surreal quality, blending elements of dark comedy, drama, and the fantastical.
